Madhya Pradesh: Lawyers Attack Couple in Court Over ‘Love Jihad’ Allegation (Video)

Rewa, 24 February – (www.deccanlive.com): In Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, a lawyers’ group attacked a couple in the district court, accusing them of Love Jihad, when they came to register their marriage. This is the second such attack on an interfaith couple within a month.

According to police reports, a Muslim man and a Hindu woman, who was wearing a burqa, arrived at the Rewa District Court to register their marriage. When the woman revealed her name, some lawyers demanded the man’s Aadhaar card to verify his religion. Upon discovering that he was Muslim, the lawyers attacked him, accusing him of Love Jihad. Soon, more lawyers joined in the assault.

When the police were informed, Civil Lines SHO Kamlesh Sahu arrived at the scene with three officers. He told The Indian Express:
The woman had a Hindu name but was wearing a burqa, which made the lawyers angry. She belonged to an upper caste. The couple was beaten and pushed.

The police further revealed that the couple had known each other for over a year and wanted to get married. The man works as a laborer, and their parents have not come forward yet. However, the police managed to rescue them from the angry crowd.

The Muslim man’s clothes were torn, while the woman was safely taken away in a police jeep. A case has been filed against unknown individuals, but no arrests have been made so far.

Meanwhile, the Rewa Bar Association has denied the involvement of lawyers in the incident. This is the second such attack this month. Earlier, in Bhopal, a similar interfaith couple was assaulted by right-wing extremists while registering their marriage, accusing the Muslim man of Love Jihad.
