She was presented in an economic offenses court the next day and was sent to judicial custody for 14 days. She was traveling on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Bengaluru when she was caught. Her frequent trips to Dubai had put her under the investigation agency’s radar.
Why Did Authorities Suspect Her?
Officials noticed that Ranya Rao had traveled to Dubai four times within 15 days, which raised suspicion.
The DRI team had received intelligence about her alleged involvement in gold smuggling, so they arrived at the airport hours before her flight landed.
She was arrested around 7 PM, shortly after her flight landed.
According to initial investigations, Kannada actress Ranya Rao was wearing a large amount of gold and had hidden gold bars inside her clothing to smuggle them into India.
Authorities also discovered that before her arrest, she attempted to bypass customs checks using her connections.
Officials seized 14.8 kg of gold from her, which she was illegally smuggling into India. However, during questioning, Ranya claimed she was traveling to Dubai for business purposes.
