Wasim’s Death: Family Accuses Police of Torture and Murder; Court Takes Serious Note
Roorkee, Uttarakhand – 11 July – (www.deccanlive.com): Wasim, a gym trainer and state-level bodybuilder from Roorkee, Uttarakhand, died under mysterious circumstances on 25 August 2024, when his body was found in a pond near his home. His family alleges police torture, illegal custody, and murder, while the police claim he drowned while trying to escape.
What Happened?
According to his cousin Alauddin, Wasim was returning home after dinner at his sister’s house on the night of 24 August. Around 1:30 am, police allegedly stopped him and six officers began questioning him. The family says the officers beat him brutally and pushed him into the pond.
Eyewitnesses said that Wasim was pleading for mercy with folded hands, but the police continued to assault him. Locals who heard his cries said police threatened them to go back inside.
Police Version
The police say they were part of a Gau Suraksha (cow protection) squad patrolling the area. They claim Wasim was carrying meat packets on his scooter and tried to flee when he saw them. According to their statement, Wasim jumped into the pond and drowned while escaping.
Police added that his post-mortem report showed injuries caused by hitting a hard object and claimed that the missing part of his lower lip was bitten off by a pangasius fish.
Court’s Response
Wasim’s family approached the Haridwar court after police refused to file a case. The court, after reviewing the post-mortem report and other evidence, ordered an FIR against six police officers, including Sub-Inspector Sharad Singh and Constables Praveen Saini and Sunil.
The court noted that six injury marks found on Wasim’s body suggest serious physical violence and police involvement cannot be ruled out.
Police Appeal and Next Hearing
The Ganga Nahar police station has appealed the decision in a higher court, which has given a temporary stay. The next hearing is scheduled for 21 July 2025.
Family Demands
Wasim’s family is demanding:
- An independent investigation by the CBI.
- Security for the family.
- Action against officers threatening witnesses.
Who Was Wasim?
Wasim was a state-level bodybuilding champion and the sole breadwinner for his family. His family, especially his mother, is in deep shock and is pleading for justice.
