Breaking News: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns, Cites Health Reasons

New Delhi, 21 July – (www.deccanlive.com): Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from the post of Vice President of India. He said his poor health was the reason for stepping down.

Jagdeep Dhankhar became the 14th Vice President of India in 2022. On August 6, 2022, he won the Vice Presidential election by defeating the opposition candidate Margaret Alva. Dhankhar received 528 votes out of 725, while Alva got 182 votes.

Early Life and Education

Jagdeep Dhankhar was born on May 18, 1951, in a simple farmer family in Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan. His early education was in his village, after which he studied at Sainik School, Chittorgarh. He was selected for NDA (National Defence Academy) but did not join. Instead, he completed his graduation from Rajasthan University and later studied law (LLB). He started his law practice while living in Jaipur.

Political Career

Dhankhar, now 70 years old, had earlier served as the Governor of West Bengal. He was appointed as the 28th Governor of Bengal by President Ram Nath Kovind on July 30, 2019. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament from Jhunjhunu between 1989 and 1991. During that time, he served as a Union Minister in the VP Singh and Chandra Shekhar governments.
