Congress Rejects Waqf Board Bill, Plans to Challenge in Supreme Court

New Delhi, 4 April (www.deccanlive.com): The Waqf Board (Amendment) Bill 2025 has been passed in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. However, the Congress party does not approve of this bill. The country’s oldest party has announced that it will soon challenge the bill in the Supreme Court, questioning its constitutional validity. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared this information on the social media platform X.
He further stated, “We strongly oppose all attacks by the Modi government on the principles, provisions, and traditions enshrined in the Indian Constitution.”
Jairam Ramesh also mentioned that Congress has already challenged the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 in the Supreme Court. In addition, the party has also filed a case against the 2019 amendments to the RTI Act 2005.
He added, “Congress has challenged the legal validity of the Election Rules (2024) in the Supreme Court.”
Furthermore, Jairam Ramesh revealed that Congress has intervened in the Supreme Court to protect the essence and provisions of the Places of Worship Act 1991. The Waqf Board Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday and later approved by the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, strongly opposed the bill, calling it “anti-Muslim” and an attempt to harm minorities. He stated that the bill has been introduced to target minority communities in India.
Kharge urged Home Minister Amit Shah not to make this bill a matter of prestige and requested the government to withdraw it.
He further warned that the “might is right” policy is not fair and will not be beneficial for anyone. He claimed that while the bill is related to charitable donations, its real intention is to deprive minorities of their rights.
Additionally, Kharge criticized the government, stating that although it talks about uplifting backward communities and women, it has been reducing the budget for minority affairs every year.
