Nitesh Rane’s Allegations Against Tablighi Jamaat Spark Strong Reactions from Scholars and Muslims

Mumbai, 6 February – (DeccanLive.com): Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane has drawn sharp criticism from Muslim leaders and scholars after making allegations against a recent Tablighi Jamaat gathering in Mumbai. In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Rane demanded a ban on such gatherings, accusing the Jamaat of promoting violence and inciting hatred.
Rane’s allegations stem from media reports that linked the death of a Hindu youth to the Tablighi Jamaat event. He claimed the youth was attacked during the gathering, which led to his death, and accused the Jamaat of making provocative speeches that incited violence. He further alleged that several others were injured as a result.
The accusations have been met with a strong response from the Muslim community in Mumbai. Scholars and community leaders dismissed Rane’s claims as baseless and demanded evidence to support his allegations.
Maulana Yar Mohammad Qasmi refuted the claims, saying, “Nitesh Rane is unsettled by the large gathering of Muslims, but he should understand that the Tablighi Jamaat is purely focused on religious teachings. It has no connection with politics or violence. The Jamaat promotes peace, interfaith harmony, and spiritual preparation for the afterlife.” He highlighted that even the Police Commissioner praised the organizers for maintaining order during the massive gathering, which saw no incidents despite the participation of thousands. He added, “Volunteers managed traffic and ensured discipline, showcasing the true values of the Jamaat.”
Maulana Imran Nadvi also criticized Rane, stating, “Nitesh Rane needs to rethink his mindset. The Tablighi Jamaat event is attended by millions, but it is characterized by discipline and humility. There was no political rhetoric or incitement, only discussions about faith and worship. His accusations reveal his Islamophobic tendencies.”
The Muslim leaders reiterated that the Tablighi Jamaat is an apolitical organization focused on spreading religious teachings and fostering harmony. They condemned Rane’s attempts to politicize the event and create communal tension.
