Supreme Court Raises Concerns Over Growing Challenges to Places of Worship Act, 1991

New Delhi, 17 February – (www.deccanlive.com): On Monday, the Supreme Court expressed concern over the growing number of petitions challenging the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.
A bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar emphasized the need to limit such petitions. The bench stated, “There is a limit to filing interventions. We will not hear the Places of Worship Act case today. This is a matter for a three-judge bench. Many petitions have been filed. This case will be listed sometime in March.”
The case involves petitions from various political parties and leaders, including Congress, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi. These parties have opposed petitions challenging provisions of the Places of Worship Act.
The Places of Worship Act, 1991, mandates that the status of religious places as it existed on August 15, 1947, should be maintained.
