Shock for Study and Work Permit Holders in Canada: Visas Can Be Canceled Anytime; What’s the Reason Behind the Risk?

New rules may cancel visas anytime. Every year, thousands of foreign people may be affected, including many from India. These rule changes will impact students, workers, and temporary visitors, many of whom are from India.

New Delhi, 24 February – (www.deccanlive.com): Canada has made major changes to its immigration rules, affecting thousands of foreign nationals, including a large number of Indians. Under the new regulations, border officials now have increased authority to cancel temporary resident visas (TRV), study permits, work permits, and electronic travel authorizations (ETA) at any time.

These new rules will impact students, workers, and temporary visitors, many of whom come from India. Canada has long been a preferred destination for Indian students, with approximately 427,000 Indian students currently studying there, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

According to a Financial Express report, Canadian border officers now have the authority to cancel study or work permits if they believe the person will not leave Canada after their visa expires. Officers can also revoke permits if they find an administrative error in the issued documents.

Under the new rules, a permit can also be canceled if the holder becomes a permanent resident of Canada or passes away. These regulations are part of broader changes in Canada’s immigration policies, including the cancellation of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program by the end of 2024.

Additionally, if a person’s situation or circumstances change, they may lose their eligibility for the visa. Canada is a popular destination for Indian travelers, with 427,000 Indian students currently studying there. From January to July 2024, Canada issued 365,750 visitor visas to Indians, compared to 345,631 during the same period in 2023.
