Mandatory Aadhaar Update for Children After Age 5: UIDAI Issues Important New Rule

Hyderabad, 16 July – (www.deccanlive.com): The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued an important advisory for parents regarding the ‘Baal Aadhaar’, the Aadhaar card issued to children below the age of five. While this card is initially issued using only the child’s name and photo, the government has now clarified that it must be updated once the child turns five.

Once a child crosses the age of five, parents are required to update their child’s Aadhaar by adding biometric details, including fingerprints, iris scan, and a fresh photograph. UIDAI has warned that failing to update the card could result in the Baal Aadhaar becoming invalid or deactivated.

Furthermore, UIDAI has emphasized that if the Aadhaar is not updated even after the child turns seven, it will no longer be valid in their system. Hence, parents are strongly advised to ensure timely updates to avoid complications.

To help parents stay informed, UIDAI has started sending alert messages to the registered mobile numbers that were provided during the Aadhaar enrollment process. Ignoring these alerts could lead to problems in availing Aadhaar-based services in the future.

The good news is that updating Baal Aadhaar is free of cost for children aged between 5 and 7. However, if the child is older than 7, a fee of ₹100 will be charged for the update.

In short, if your child has turned 5, it’s mandatory to visit a UIDAI center or Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update their biometric details. Delaying this process can lead to deactivation of the Aadhaar card, causing issues in accessing essential services linked to Aadhaar.
