Meat Shops Likely to Close in Delhi During Kanwar Yatra – BJP Government Begins Preparations

New Delhi, 8 July – (www.deccanlive.com): Ahead of the Kanwar Yatra, which starts on July 11, political discussions have started around the closure of meat and fish shops in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, the government has already announced that meat shops along the Kanwar routes will be closed from July 10. Now, Delhi’s Minister Kapil Mishra has also said that meat shops will remain closed in Delhi during the Yatra.

Most Meat Shops are Illegal – Says Minister

Kapil Mishra claimed that most meat shops in Delhi are illegal, and such shops will not be allowed to stay open during the religious Yatra.

So far, Delhi Police has not released any official notification regarding the Kanwar Yatra routes, but in reality, Kanwariyas (pilgrims) pass through almost every part of Delhi, some areas more heavily than others.

Meat Sellers Worried – Month-long Livelihood at Risk

According to Aaj Tak, this statement has created panic among meat shop owners, especially because:

  • No official notice has been given yet.
  • No such closure has happened before.

In areas like Nizamuddin, where many meat shops sell both raw and cooked meat, shopkeepers say they will follow the rules if there is an order, but closing for a month will severely impact their earnings.

Ghazipur Meat Market May Also Be Closed

The Ghazipur meat market, located near the Delhi-UP border, is NCR’s largest meat supply hub. It supplies meat not only to Delhi but also to cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad.

Kanwar Yatra preparations are already happening along this highway. Thousands of Kanwariyas use this road, and the Ghazipur meat market is located near this route.

Traders Say Their Shops Are Legal

Meat traders are angry and worried. They claim:

  • Their shops are not illegal, they are registered under the Municipal Corporation.
  • Even then, the government might shut them down during the Yatra.
  • They have not received any written orders, but there is still fear and uncertainty.
