Abu Asim Azmi Suspended from Maharashtra Assembly for Praising Aurangzeb

Mumbai, March 5 (www.deccanlive.com): Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Asim Azmi has been suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for the entire session after he praised Aurangzeb. As soon as the assembly proceedings began on Wednesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil proposed his suspension.
BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar reacted to the issue, stating that Abu Asim Azmi should not be suspended for just one or two sessions but should be permanently removed from his position. He added, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is worshipped, and we will not tolerate anyone disrespecting him.”
What Did Abu Asim Azmi Say?
MLA Abu Asim Azmi made comments regarding the Marathi film ‘Chhava,’ which is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He criticized the portrayal of historical events in the film and stated that Aurangzeb was a good administrator.
Abu Asim Azmi also said, “The film ‘Chhava’ is showing false history. Aurangzeb built many temples. I don’t think he was a cruel ruler.” He further claimed that during Aurangzeb’s reign, India was called the “Golden Bird.”

Apology Issued
However, the Samajwadi Party MLA later apologized for his remarks praising Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Azmi stated that his words were misinterpreted and that he was ready to withdraw his statement and apologize if it hurt anyone’s sentiments.
In a video posted on Instagram, he said, “My statement has been twisted. I only repeated what historians and writers have recorded about Aurangzeb (Rahmatullah Alaih). I did not make any disrespectful remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, or any other personality.”
