Hyderabad Facing Water Crisis: Report Sent to Government

Hyderabad, 18 March – (www.deccanlive.com): Hyderabad is at risk of a severe underground water shortage. A recent survey by the Water Board shows that groundwater levels are dangerously low in most areas. Out of 948 square kilometers surveyed, only 27 square kilometers have a safe water level, while the remaining 921 square kilometers are facing a crisis.

In areas like Hitech City, Madhapur, Serilingampally, and Kukatpally, people have booked water tankers repeatedly. Records show that 22,000 people booked around 4.5 lakh water tankers, something never seen before in the city’s history.

Officials found that in a 5 km area around Hitech City, rainwater is not seeping into the ground due to excessive cemented surfaces and a lack of water pits. Even though rainfall was higher than last year, most of the water is flowing into the Musi River as drainage instead of replenishing groundwater.

The demand for water tankers in Hyderabad has doubled, with residents booking 11,000 tankers daily. Areas like Hitech City, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Nizampet, Pragathi Nagar, Madhapur, Manikonda, and SR Nagar are facing the worst shortage. Many apartment borewells have dried up, making people rely completely on Water Board tankers.

To supply water up to the Outer Ring Road, there are 81 water-filling stations. Due to the emergency, the Water Board is setting up 17 more stations. In 2024, Hyderabad had 586 water tankers, but now 678 tankers are in use, with extra staff hired to meet the demand.
