Zakia Jafri, Widow of MP Ehsan Jafri and 2002 Gujarat Riot Survivor, Passes Away

Ahmedabad, 1 February – (DeccanLive.com): Zakia Jafri, the widow of Ehsan Jafri, passed away on February 1, 2025, after a long battle for justice. She had fought for 23 years for the victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Her fight for justice continued until her last breath. “Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’oon.”

Ehsan Jafri was brutally killed in the Gulberg Society massacre in Ahmedabad during the 2002 riots, where Hindu extremists killed several people, including Ehsan, right in front of Zakia.

Zakia Jafri was the wife of Ehsan Jafri, a Congress Member of Parliament and an intellectual figure. After her husband’s death, Zakia dedicated her life to seeking justice through legal means. She tirelessly worked to ensure that the perpetrators of the Gujarat riots were punished.

Zakia Jafri even approached the Supreme Court in her fight against the massacre of Muslims in the 2002 Gujarat riots. She initiated her legal battle by trying to file a complaint against then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the police of failing to file a First Information Report (FIR) against him and other BJP leaders involved in the anti-Muslim violence.
