Mango truck overturns in Andhra Pradesh; 9 workers die, 10 injured

Annamayya – AP, 14 July – (www.deccanlive.com): A tragic accident took place in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday night when a truck carrying mangoes overturned, leading to the death of 9 laborers and injuries to 10 others. Among the deceased, 5 were women. The truck was on its way to the Railway Koduru market, and several laborers were sitting on top of the mango load.

The incident happened in Reddy Cheruvu Katta area of Pullampeta Mandal, nearly 60 kilometers from Kadapa city. According to police, the workers were crushed under approximately 30 to 40 tons of mangoes when the truck lost control and overturned. The truck driver survived the accident and informed the police that he tried to avoid a collision with an oncoming car, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

The laborers were daily-wage workers from Railway Koduru and Venkatagiri Mandal of Tirupati district. They had gone to pick mangoes in the villages of Esukapalli and nearby areas. The truck was returning to market with the mangoes and the laborers sitting on top of them.

Out of the 9 deceased, 8 died on the spot while one person died during treatment at the Rajampet Government Hospital. The victims were identified as Gajjala Durgaiah, Gajjala Lakshmi Devi, Gajjala Ramana, Gajjala Srinu, Radha, Venkata Subbamma, Chittemma, and Subba Ratnamma. Muni Chandra passed away later at the hospital. The injured have been shifted to RIMS Hospital in Kadapa for better treatment.

Andhra Pradesh’s Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy and District In-Charge Minister BC Janardhan Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured full support to the affected families. Former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also offered condolences and demanded proper medical care for the injured and financial help for the families of the deceased.
